     new director on local board

Dr. Barbara Christmas Golden, a native of Reidsville, was recently appointed to the Ogeechee Technical College Local Board of Directors. Golden is a retired educator and is Past Chair of the Georgia Southern University Foundation.  She earned her B.S., M.Ed. and Ed.S. Degrees from Georgia Southern University and was selected to participate in the Principals’ Institute at Harvard University as well as the Leadership Institute for Principals at Oxford University.  She received her doctorate from Nova University.

In 2009, Barbara was named “Alumna of the Year” for Georgia Southern University.  A few years earlier, she was named "Alumna of the Year" for GSU’s School of Education.

Barbara has served as a teacher, principal, curriculum director, and elected local school board member.  As principal, Barbara led two schools which were named "Georgia Schools of Excellence.” St. Marys Elementary was named a “National School of Excellence” under her leadership.

Various leadership roles have given her a unique perspective of educational issues.  Barbara served as president of three statewide professional associations and as Vice Chair of the Georgia School Improvement Panel during Governor Zell Miller’s administration.

Barbara was one of 30 educators chosen nationwide to serve as a resource participant to meet with the nation’s governors and top business CEO’s at the 1996 National Educational Summit in Palisades, New York.

In 2003, the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders awarded Barbara the Fulbright Distinguished Service Award, considered the most prestigious honor given to a Georgia school administrator.

For nine years, Barbara served as head of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), the state’s largest education association, which now has more than 90,000 members. She also served as President of the PAGE Foundation, sponsor of the state STAR Student/STAR Teacher program.

Barbara served as CEO of the Tech High Foundation in Atlanta and as founding CEO of Tech High School, a charter school which served inner-city youth in downtown Atlanta.

Most recently, Barbara served as founding CEO of Southeastern Early College and Career Academy located on the campus of Southeastern Technical College in Vidalia.  This career academy was the first regional charter school in Georgia established by a partnership of four rural school districts and a technical college. .

She has served on numerous boards, including the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Georgia Southern University Foundation, and the Lynda Brannen Williamson Foundation. She currently serves as Vice Chair of the Finance Committee of Statesboro First United Methodist Church.

Barbara is married to Bill Golden and resides in Statesboro.

Ogeechee Technical College’s Local Board of Directors functions in an advisory capacity, as well as serving as ambassadors for the College. Representatives from Bulloch, Evans, and Screven Counties, the three counties in the College’s service delivery area, serve on the Board. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Golden to our board,” said Lori Durden, Ogeechee Tech President. “Her commitment to education and this community is unwavering.”
