Program Purpose and Mission

The mission of the Ogeechee Technical College Surgical Technology program is to provide entry-level technical skills to students desiring to become Certified Surgical Technologist.  The program provides classroom, laboratory, and clinical training for students desiring employment as a qualified entry-level practitioner in the field of Surgical Technology and related areas.

The Surgical Technology program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The Surgical Technology program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s surgical technology profession.  Some of the responsibilities include, preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment and sterile drapes and assisting the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.  During surgery, technologists pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants.  They may hold retractors, cut sutures, and help keep track of sponges and needles by keeping an accurate count.  They also assist in the preparation of specimens for laboratory or pathology and help apply dressings after surgery is completed.

Admission Requirements

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

Program Requirements

  • Submit a completed application and application fee
  • Submit official high school transcript or GED transcript
  • Submit official college transcripts, if applicable

Program Completion
Credits:  87 credit hours

Quarters:  18 months

Career Outlook
Job opportunities are expected to be favorable.  Employment of surgical technologists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012 as the volume of surgery increases. Technological advances, such as fiber optics and laser technology, will also permit new surgical procedures to be performed.

Certification

Upon completion of the Surgical Technology Program, students are eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam offered by the Liaison Council on Certification for Surgical

Technologist (LCC-ST).

Median annual earnings for surgical technologist in 2002 were $33, 790. The highest 10 percent earned more than $43,470.
