Ogeechee Tech Students Participate
in Haz Mat Drill at EGRMC

Ogeechee Tech Students Participate in Haz Mat Drill at EGRMC.

When East Georgia Regional Medical Center held a Hazardous Materials Disaster Drill recently, 19 Ogeechee Technical College students from the Paramedic, Emergency Medical Technician, and Nursing programs were on-hand to pose as victims.  Students were used to simulate a variety of hazardous material contaminations and were “decontaminated” through a process which would be utilized in the event of an actual hazardous materials incident.  In the photograph here, EMS programs director Karen Grabenstein simulates washing down EMT student Lyle Odom, prior to the beginning of the actual drill.  East Georgia Regional Medical Center is required to conduct drills to meet standards prescribed by their accrediting agency.  Ogeechee Tech nursing instructor, Cheryl Ard was also on hand to assist with the drill.  Karen Grabenstein stated, “Even though our students are posing as victims, this is a valuable learning tool for them to see how a scenario such as this unfolds.  This is a win-win situation because the hospital needs ‘victims’ and our students need the exposure to this type emergency.”  “Our students will likely encounter this same sort of drill, and possibly a real incident such as this, when they enter the workforce, so having the opportunity to witness a drill such as this first-hand is great experience,” stated Cheryl Ard.
