Starting College as a
Non-Traditional Student

Ogeechee Technical College Student Affairs Assistant in the Financial Aid area, Melba Williams, recently contributed an article to the Georgia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators newsletter for distribution to the memberships entire email list serve.  Melba’s article outlines the type of work she, and others, do at Ogeechee Tech daily, and the value to students that is achieved.  Melba serves on the diversity committee with GASFAA.

Recently, I had a student who had lost her job through no fault of her own. The student had worked in a Manufacturing Plant that closed and moved operations overseas. She felt unsure of herself because she was beginning a new venture, “starting college.” She came to see me about financial aid and of course I explained the process and told her what documents she would need to complete the process. I also mentioned to her it would be quicker if she inputted her FAFSA information into the computer. She mentioned that she had a computer at home and would try to complete the FAFSA on her own. Sure enough the lady did complete the FAFSA and brought the signature page in to our office. This lady was excited she had overcome this first step and was feeling more confident she was going to succeed in her new venture.

Because this lady was laid off from her job, she was able to get some assistance from a program that helps displaced workers. This student got assistance through a program called the Workforce Investment Act that was handled through the Georgia Department of Labor. This program has a wide range of services that are available at no cost to the individuals it assists with training/education opportunities and financial aid application assistance.

Feeling more assured, this student is now set to start her program without any financial worries and hopefully once her program of study is complete she can begin a new job/career!
