Ogeechee Tech Awarded
Ogeechee Technical College has been awarded a $5000 grant with which to conduct a Scientific Planning and Research Camp (SPARC). Ogeechee Tech hosted SPARC on the Statesboro campus last summer, and once again will offer the opportunity for selected students to participate in the activity during their schools’ summer break. SPARC is an opportunity for students completing eighth grade to learn about local industries that employ the primary technologies of fabrication and manufacturing in their production processes: i.e. electronics, robotics, machine tool technology, welding, CAD/CAM and process control. The experience will enhance team building skills, knowledge of workplace safety, and awareness of the relationship between high school and post secondary career options. SPARC is open to girls and boys. All youth are encouraged to apply regardless of means. Camp expenses will be covered by the grant and sponsors. To apply for this valuable summer camp experience students should ask their school guidance counselor or eighth grade advisor about a SPARC application. The selection process is competitive, so students are encouraged to see their guidance counselor as soon as possible. The grant application was made cooperatively by the Division of Institutional Advancement and the Division of Economic Development at Ogeechee Tech. The Economic Development Division will coordinate the camp. Dr. Ben Thompson, Vice President for Economic Development at Ogeechee Tech, stated, “This camp was very worthwhile last summer, so we feel strongly that it is something that we should do again. Being awarded the grant, along with the support we receive from a number of sponsors, will allow us to provide this camp to students. We hope that students will access the information necessary to apply.” For more information on SPARC, or any other program at Ogeechee Technical College, visit www.ogeecheetech.edu.
