Ogeechee Technical College recently played host to over two hundred high school students who competed in a Skills USA Georgia competition for Region six.  A non-profit organization, Skills USA Georgia is the Career Technology Student Organization for students enrolled in Trade and Industrial, Technical, Health Science Technology, and Service Occupations training programs in Georgia’s secondary schools.  Partially funded through the Georgia General Assembly, Skills USA Georgia is an arm of the national Skills USA program.  Skills USA region six encompasses 28 counties.

Twenty one different schools participated in the recent competition in held in Statesboro, some from as far away as Thomson, Lincolnton, and Sandersville.  This was the first time Ogeechee Tech hosted the event.  “We are very pleased with the way this competition turned out here on our campus, and we hope that we will be able to host this even on an annual basis,” stated Ogeechee Tech president Dr. Dawn Cartee.

Students competed in a wide variety of competition areas, including, Advertising Design, Architectural Drafting, Automotive Refinishing Technology, Automotive Service Technology, Basic Health Care Skills, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Collision Repair Technology, Computer Maintenance Technology, and Cosmetology.  In addition, Extemporaneous Speaking, First Aid/CPR, Graphic Communications, Health Knowledge Bowl, Job Interview, Job Skill Demonstration, Masonry, Medical Assisting, and Opening and Closing Ceremonies competitions were held.  Rounding out the competition areas were Plumbing, Power Equipment Technology, Precision Machining Technology, Prepared Speech, Preschool Teaching Assistant, Quiz Bowl, Residential Wiring, Team Works, Technical Drafting, and Welding.  “Many of the Skills USA competition areas are also program areas, or at least related areas, at Ogeechee Tech, so the lab areas and instructors at the College were very compatible with the support needed for putting on an event of this kind,” stated Rusty Denning, Ogeechee Tech’s Director of Business and Industry in the College’s Economic Development division.  “Judges for the events came from a combination of OTC instructors and community volunteers from a variety of industries,” Denning further stated.

Approximately 50 to 60 teachers, counselors, and advisors for the contestants also traveled to Statesboro for the competition.  Many of the students and others present for the competition took advantage of tours offered by Ogeechee Tech.  “This was a great way for us to showcase our campus, and to let these students know all that we have to offer here at our College,” stated Cartee.  Many industry judges for the event viewed the opportunity to assist with the event as a means of assessing potential future employees.  “This was a great way for employers to see what sort of talent may be coming along in their industries by evaluating the quality of work produced by these students,” Denning concluded.
