Ogeechee Tech Provides
When the Tour de Georgia visited downtown Statesboro recently for the start of the second leg of the famed bicycle race, Ogeechee Technical College Paramedic/EMT instructor Karen Grabenstein was on-hand with eight of her students to provide first aid for the event. The popular bike race invaded downtown Statesboro with hundreds of participants and spectators, and even though the teams had their own medical providers standing by, the throng of visitors and vendors needed someone in case they suffered an injury or illness. “With streets being blocked off and clogged with the cyclists and support teams, EMS response to the downtown location could be have been hampered, so having emergency responders in the immediate area was a good idea to provide support until EMS could arrive in the event of an emergency,” stated Grabenstein. A number of Ogeechee Tech faculty, staff, and administration also attended the event to offer assistance wherever needed, in addition to supporting the students who were there to offer medical assistance. “What a great experience for our EMT students to see what it takes to provide coverage for a large event like this. This was not only a way for us to help out the Tour de Georgia event here in Statesboro, but it was a learning experience for our students,” commented Dr. Jessie Strickland, Vice President for Academic Affairs at OTC. OTC President, Dr. Dawn Cartee, was also on-hand and commented, “This is great exposure for Ogeechee Tech and for our EMS program, as well as being beneficial to our students. They might never again have the opportunity to participate in such an event.” To learn more about EMS training at Ogeechee Tech, visit www.ogeecheetech.edu. Contact: Barry Turner |
