Ogeechee Tech Alumnae Featured Ogeechee Technical College Tumor Registry graduate Flora Beard was recently featured in the Transformations newsletter of the Nancy and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at St. Joseph’s/Candler Health in Savannah. Below is an excerpt from the newsletter: Flora Beard, a Certified Tumor Registrar, Data Integrity and Regulatory Specialist with the Cancer Registry at the Nancy and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion (LCRP), knows that her role is an integral part of a system that’s dedicated to curing cancer. “We may not give patients chemo or radiation like a nurse or doctor,” Beard says, “but we work just as hard, right alongside them, to make a difference in the lives of all our patients.” The data the registry collects provides important statistics and trends on site specific cancers (colon, breast, lung, etc.) from our local area. This important information is then merged with the state registry where it can be included with national cancer statistics. These statistics are valuable in helping determine the overall number of cancers locally, where the cases are coming from and how we can better address the need for care. Beard cites the LCRP registry’s lifetime follow-up program for patients as a key initiative to improve cancer care outcomes. This initiative serves as a tool for determining survival patterns, evaluating diagnoses and treatment, facilitating studies, and establishing awareness of diseases. “Medicine has always fascinated me,” continues Beard, who originally trained to be an emergency medical technician. The long hours of training, however, took a tool on her family. So she put her medical career on hold for twenty-six years in order to raise her three boys. Beard was a member of the first graduating class accredited in Cancer Registry by the National Cancer Registry Association at Ogeechee Technical College, in Statesboro, Georgia. “I’m proud of the work that I get to be a part of at the LCRP,” Beard says, “and proud to be making a difference for our patients."
