Ogeechee Technical College biology instructor, Dan Bickerton, took his ornithology class on a fieldtrip to Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge in McIntosh County recently. The class was able to see North America’s only stork, the Wood Stork, according to Bickerton. “The Wood Stork is currently on the endangered list, but there is a proposal to move it to the threatened list, which means it is not on the verge of extinction,” said Bickerton. The class observed the birds at one of their nesting sites.
“Seeing these birds, and others, first-hand is a great way to reinforce the subject matter learned in the classroom,” said Bickerton. Many of the ornithology class members are in the Fish & Wildlife Management program at the College.
