Recognizing Distress in Students
Most students will face some personal, academic, and social stressors. Most students will be able to handle these challenges on their own or with minimal help, but some may experience them as overwhelming and unmanageable. When that happens I want the students to be aware that I am here on campus to help. I am available to provide short-term counseling designed to deal with personal, family, social, and educational concerns. Also, please feel free to ask me questions at anytime. I will continue to send out emails to all students with tips on how to handle some of these situations. If any of you need some of these emails, please let me know.
Don’t forget you can submit the “First Alert Referral Form” to either Ty White or Penny Hendrix if you notice a student struggling academically, socially, or personally. The form is located on the Career Counseling, Personal Counseling, Disabilities Services web pages. Examples of reasons for concerns:
Academic concerns: Poor performance on assignments, not having textbooks, unrealistic academic expectations, etc.
Personal concerns: Removal from other students, lack of involvement, recently experiencing a traumatic event, lack of emotional support from home, a chronic illness, etc.
Financial difficulties: Work schedule conflicts, working many hours/late hours, unresolved financial aid issues, change in income, etc.
