22 Teams Compete in Annual Golf Tournament to Raise Funds for Adult Literacy

22 teams recently competed in the annual J. David Russell Memorial Golf Tournament at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro to raise funds for Adult Education and Adult Literacy at Ogeechee Technical College.
Prior to the 12:30 pm shotgun start, Samantha Smith, Dean of Adult Education at OTC, expressed thanks to the OTC Foundation and those who participated in, and sponsored, the golf tournament.
“So much work goes on behind the scenes to make this event possible. We are so grateful to all of you. You are all now a part of the behind the scenes work for the Adult Education Program as we seek to help students achieve their goals,” said Smith.
Dean Smith then introduced Lindsey Brannen, a 2023 Dinah Culbreath Wayne EAGLE Delegate for the Adult Education Program. Brannen shared her story about obtaining her GED and thanked those in attendance for their support.
“I just want to say thank you. I finished my GED in October, and I could not have done it without the scholarship that I received through the Adult Education Program,” said Brannen. “Thank you everyone for being here today and helping students like me.”
The tournament headed by premier sponsors Morris Bank and Franklin Toyota consisted of a pool of 22 teams that all competed to raise money for the College’s adult literacy programs in Bulloch, Evans, and Screven counties.
“The Ogeechee Technical College Foundation is so thankful for the generosity from our sponsors, supporters and volunteers, both new and returning,” said Michelle Davis, VP for College Advancement. “Congratulations to our tournament winners and thank you for each team that took the time out of their busy schedules to support us and make it possible for the Foundation to support our students in our Adult Education Program.”
The tournament’s first-place net total winners were from Morris Bank and consisted of golfers Cliff Wildes, Greg Olliff, Rhett Polk, and Cannon DeLoach. The first-place gross total winners were from Franklin Toyota and consisted of golfers Kyle Sherfesee, Kaleb Smith, Dirk Graham, and Buddy Jones. The “Longest Drive” winner was Scott Odell, and Dirk Graham won the “Closest to the Pin” contest.
The proceeds will be used to help pay for the cost of the GED exam for qualifying students and to provide Integrated Education and Training (IET) opportunities for students as well.
