Canoochee River Clean-up

On Saturday, July 14th, members of the Ogeechee Technical College (OTC) Wildlife Club partnered with the Ogeechee River Keepers to help clean the Canoochee River, located on the Daisy-Nevils highway in Evans County. With help from Evans County local, Joe Smith, as well as, Jenn West and Simona Perry from the Ogeechee River Keepers, OTC Wildlife Club members picked up eleven large bags of trash, a TV, three tires with one still on the rim, 2 hub caps, Kitchen Aid mixer with the beaters still attached, an inflatable mattress, metal folding chair, plastic lawn chair, a 30-gallon trash can, and a large pool float.
The Canoochee River is a part of the Ogeechee River watershed. It originates in Emanuel County and runs approximately 100 miles southeastward before it flows into the Ogeechee River at the border of Bryan and Chatham Counties.
Casey Corbett, OTC Wildlife Club advisor, said, “The rivers of Georgia have always been important sources for drinking water, navigation, and recreation but the beautiful black water of the Canoochee and other rivers are being threaten by trash and other pollutants from careless humans. These students and concerned citizens took time out of their busy Saturday morning to help remove this trash. There is a Native American proverb that reads, ‘We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.’ We must remember this and do our part to keep our waters clean.”
