Dental Assisting Students Visit Local Schools

Posted on Mar 11, 2019 at 14:11 PM

Dental Assisting students from Ogeechee Technical College recently visited area Pre-K classrooms, including Brooklet Elementary, Bulloch Academy, Nevils Elementary, Sallie Zetterower Elementary, Southeast Bulloch High School, and Stilson Elementary. Each group of dental assisting students created their own presentation and educated students about oral health and nutrition. They played games and talked about germ bugs (bacterial plaque), proper brushing habits, flossing, good and unhealthy snacks, and their first trip to the dentist.  Each child received a new toothbrush and coloring sheets.

Program Director, Yvonne Jenkins, said, “The activity fits well with the curriculum of the Preventive Dentistry course the OTC students are now taking. The class teaches the students to educate and counsel patients in the areas of dental disease, oral hygiene, and nutrition.” Jenkins said she was pleased at how hard her students had worked on their presentations.  “I’m happy that we have the opportunity to share this information with the children.  It is important that children start good dental health habits now for a lifetime of good oral health.”
