Esthetician Certificate within reach for OTC Student

Amaya Brown, a member of the first ever cohort of REACH Georgia Scholars, has enrolled at Ogeechee Technical College to pursue her Esthetician Certificate.

As a Bulloch County REACH Scholar, Brown earned up to $10,000 in scholarship funds that she could use at any Georgia REACH eligible college or university. Of the 82 institutions listed as eligible in the state of Georgia, Brown chose Ogeechee Tech.

Brown began her journey at OTC as a dual enrollment student from Statesboro High School. While taking classes at OTC, she became fascinated with the world of Esthetics. “When I was here as a high school student I became interested in the Esthetician program,” said Brown. “I was always fascinated with waxes and facials – there is just a lot you can do with it.”

Brown’s long-term goals include becoming a Nurse Practitioner and she hopes to earn her Esthetics license as a means to further her education. “I plan on continuing to work in Esthetics even after I become a nurse practitioner, but it will be really helpful to work in a salon as an esthetician to help pay for the rest of my education.”

In February of 2012, former Governor Nathan Deal, launched REACH Georgia (Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen) as Georgia’s first public-private, needs-based mentorship and scholarship program. The program exists to lend financial, academic and social support to ensure students graduate from high school and attain a college degree or certificate.

In 2013, as a 7th grader at Langston Chapel Middle School, Brown was selected as one of Bulloch County’s five recipients in the very first cohort of REACH Georgia Scholars. “I have really enjoyed being a REACH scholar. I have gotten really close with my mentor, she helped me set goals for myself and helped me maintain the grades I needed to keep my scholarship,” said Brown. “I’m excited to continue chasing my dreams here at OTC.

Brown plans to earn her Esthetician Certificate in December 2021.
