Hand Earns CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst Certification

Posted on Jul 20, 2020 at 12:05 PM

Ogeechee Technical College Computer Information Systems instructor, Terry Hand, recently earned his CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) certification which will allow OTC to increase their course offerings for the Cybersecurity program in the fall.

“The expansion of the Cybersecurity program comes at a time where IT-related initiatives are taking place across the state,” Hand explained. “There is a big push to make Georgia the technology capital of the east coast and it is attracting technology-related business and industry to this area, creating more opportunity for our graduates.”

Hand, who has been teaching at OTC since January 2003, completed his certification in June and is excited about the prospect of taking what he’s learned and applying it to the new courses he will be teaching.

“Cybersecurity is a rapidly evolving field and it is necessary to stay on top of your certifications in order to continue teaching relevant curriculum to the students,” he said. “The CySA+ has given me the opportunity to teach things like Computer Forensics, Ethical Hacking, and Network Defenses and Countermeasures, on top of our already established curriculum.”

The CySA+ is an intensive IT workforce certification that trains the recipient to prevent, detect and combat cybersecurity threats through the application of behavioral analytics.

Another added benefit to achieving this certificate is that Hand has been added to the statewide Cybersecurity Curriculum Team. “I’ve already had the opportunity to work with the curriculum team to update, add, and remove statewide course content, it has been really fun,” he said.

The CySA+ certification is only the most recent of a long line of certifications that Hand has earned over the course of the last 10 years. Among them include several from Microsoft in addition to the A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications he’s earned from CompTIA, the company that also provides the CySA+ certification.

This fall, the OTC Cybersecurity program classes will be taking place in a newly equipped and renovated space. The program has increased square footage for instruction as well as added 25 new computers and additional educational software for hands-on training purposes.
