OTC Cybersecurity Students Bring Home Gold in National Competition

Posted on Jun 09, 2026 at 14:50 PM

Ogeechee Technical College’s two-person team of Andrew Mitchell and Austin “AJ” Redman, won Gold in the Cybersecurity competition held at the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta on June 1-5.

“From day one, Andrew and AJ have impressed me with their passion for cybersecurity, their drive to succeed, and their commitment to excellence,” said Terry Hand, Cybersecurity Instructor. “They are both incredible individuals and I am honored to have been their instructor.”

The annual SkillsUSA conference was a showcase of career and technical education where more than 6,800 outstanding career and technical education students, all state contest winners, competed hands-on in 115 different trade, technical and leadership categories. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, testing competencies set by industry for entry-level workers.

The Cybersecurity team from OTC has won GOLD at the national level twice in the last 4 years and brought home a silver medal in 2024.

“Amazing things are happening in the world of Cybersecurity in here at OTC,” said Hand. “To be national champions 2 out of the last 4 years proves that we have one of the best programs in the country.”

As a team of two, the competition is open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with Cybersecurity, Information Security, or Systems and Networking Security Architecture. Students were tested on the elements of the NIST Publication 800-181 Cybersecurity Workforce Framework categories, including Securely Provision, Operate and Maintain, and Protect and Defend.
