Paramedic students get special training on cadavers

Posted on Aug 24, 2020 at 17:33 PM

Recently, Ogeechee Technical College Paramedicine Technology students traveled to Glynn County to participate in the Emergency Care Trauma Skills lab where they had the opportunity to train on cadavers.

Hosted by the Georgia EMS Association and the Georgia Trauma Commission, the hands-on, immersive session gave the students the opportunity to review relevant anatomy associated with critical care and life saving emergency procedures.

“Our students are very fortunate to have this type of training,” said Chris Page, OTC’s Paramedicine Technology program director. “Students don’t always get the opportunity to practice on real tissue, enhancing what they’ve learned on the manikins in our lab. This training will make them better paramedics in the field.”

Attendees of the training were able to practice skills like airway management, direct intubation, video intubation and other various emergency procedures on the cadavers.

“The cadaver lab was a great opportunity for us to practice skills that will be a part of our daily work when we complete the Paramedicine Technology program. It gave me a more realistic idea of how it feels to perform these skills on real patients and increased my confidence practicing these skills moving forward,” said Catherine Jayroe, a student in the Paramedicine Technology Program.
