SLC sponsors second Soup Kitchen

Posted on Nov 24, 2020 at 19:35 PM

On Saturday, November 14, the Student Leadership Council (SLC) of Ogeechee Technical College sponsored the Statesboro Soup Kitchen at the First United Methodist Church in Statesboro.

The participants arrived and began preparing food at 9:00 a.m. and served meals of spaghetti, garlic bread, green beans, and cookies. The group served 407 community members between the hours of 9:00 am – 1:00 p.m.

This is the second time since COVID protocols would allow that the SLC has sponsored the soup kitchen this year.  Beckie Snyder, Administrative Assistant for the Associate VP of Student Affairs and staff advisor for SLC, was overwhelmed with the amount of help at the kitchen. “We had volunteers from all over campus come to assist this week,” said Snyder. “It was great to see members from various different clubs and organizations come together to serve our community.”

Those who volunteered from Ogeechee Tech included students, staff, and members from Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), SLC, the Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (SCNAVTA), the Student Veterans Association (SVA), and the Echocardiography program.

The Soup Kitchen is open from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. every Saturday for service.

Ogeechee on the Go is the name of Ogeechee Technical College’s community service initiative. OTC students and employees routinely participate in projects designed to support worthwhile causes within the community.
