Samantha Smith, Dean of Adult Education at Ogeechee Technical College, announced recently at the Evans County Board of Commissioners meeting that Georgia’s Governor, Brian Kemp, signed a proclamation naming September 8-14, 2019 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

An official copy of the Governor’s proclamation was given to Smith following her address at the Board of Commissioners Meeting. According to Governor Kemp’s proclamation, “Approximately 32 million Americans cannot read or write, and in Georgia alone, roughly 1.1 million individuals over the age of eighteen have not completed high school or received a General Education Development certificate.”

Smith has spent some time recently visiting local councils sharing the news. “My goal was to ensure that the local governments of each county knew our specific services, and how our services added value to their communities.” She has recently visited the Statesboro City Council, Evans County Board of Commissioners, Claxton City Council, and will be visiting the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners on September, 17.
