George W. Strickland Jr. Foundation Signs Endowment Worth $500,000 to fund The Strickland Promise

The Ogeechee Technical College Foundation, Inc. acknowledges with gratitude a generous commitment of $500,000 from the Board of Directors for the George W. Strickland, Jr. Foundation to establish, The Strickland Promise, in support of Ogeechee Technical College’s (OTC) efforts in recruiting, retaining, and enrollment of graduating high school seniors from Evans County.

“We are incredibly grateful to The Strickland Foundation for continuing to invest in our mission to educate and empower our local workforce,” said OTC President, Lori Durden. “The Strickland Promise will help remove financial barriers to education and create a seamless pathway for our high school graduates in Evans County.”

By establishing The Strickland Promise, the board of Directors for the George W. Strickland Foundation will be providing scholarships for qualified Evans County graduating seniors. The scholarship will help offset costs remaining after all federal, state, and any other financial awards are applied to tuition.

George W. Strickland, or “Mr. Jack” as his employees knew him, founded Evans Concrete in 1948, and before his death in 2010, its footprint reached and employed residents from approximately 16 counties in southeast Georgia. The foundation was established to carry on Strickland’s altruistic legacy, guided by a Henry Drummond quote Strickland was known to carry on a hand-written card in his wallet.

“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

In order to qualify, students must be a resident of Evans County and must have graduated from Claxton High School, Pinewood Christian Academy, or an accredited home school. The scholarship is currently available to students in the Class of 2024 and will be made available to future graduating classes. Students must enroll in full-time coursework each term to retain eligibility and remain in good academic standing with OTC.
