OTC Electrical Students Repair Historic Emma Kelly Theater Marquee

Ogeechee Technical College Electrical Systems Technology students got a one-of-a-kind hands-on learning opportunity repairing lighting issues on the marquee on the face of the historic Emma Kelly Theater in downtown Statesboro.

“Our beloved marquee has been struggling for a while with intermittent lighting issues,” said Robert Faller, Executive Director and Production Manager/Technical Director for the theater. “It was a pleasure to have OTC students and their instructor here learning and observing the marquee and its intricacies while they helped us get it working again. We appreciate their kindness, time, and effort.”

OTC instructor Matt Peacock observed that a few of the light panels behind the changeable copy sign were not functioning properly causing lighting issues at night. In addition, several bulbs underneath the sign were also not working.

“We had the opportunity to look at the junction boxes and electric panel upstairs to see how the complex display was powered and supported,” said Peacock. “The students then had the opportunity to check terminations and replace the non-functioning bulbs to help get the sign ready for the holiday season.”

Built in 1936 as The Georgia Theater, today’s Emma Kelly Theater houses a variety of live performances throughout the year.
