Air Evac 95 Visits Ogeechee Technical College to Educate EMS and Nursing Students

Air Evac 95, based in Statesboro, recently visited Ogeechee Technical College (OTC) to provide valuable insights to students in the Paramedicine Technology and Nursing programs.

"We are incredibly grateful to flight paramedic John Pulte and flight RN James Coto for sharing their experiences and explaining the differences between scene landings for EMS and interfacility transfers for nurses," said Chris Page, Director of OTC's Paramedicine Program.

The visit featured an engaging and educational session on air medical helicopter operations, emphasizing the vital role they play in providing emergency access to rural areas. The flight crew offered detailed insights into scene landing operations, where they navigate various terrains—such as roads, highways, and fields—for safe landings. They also discussed the types of requests they receive from local EMS agencies, the care they provide, and the weather conditions required for these operations.

Students learned about the autonomy the flight crew operates under, which allows them to deliver advanced care in critical situations, often surpassing the level of responsibility seen in hospital settings. After the presentation, students had the opportunity to explore the helicopter, examine the equipment, and ask questions about the unique challenges of air medical transport.

“This hands-on experience highlighted the specialized skills and teamwork essential for air medical operations,” said Page. “It’s important to have these structured experiences in class so that they are better prepared for real world scenarios after they graduate.”
