Licensure/Certification

Graduates of the Sonography program are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Examinations which include Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI), Abdomen(AB) and Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN) to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

Ogeechee Technical College's Sonography program has a 100% pass rate for the SPI, Abdomen, and OBGYN examinations. All of these surpass the ARDMS National Pass Rate.

Other Information

Ultrasound Program graduates are eligible to sit for national certification examinations for sonographers and are prepared to function as professionals in the sonography field. Program graduates are to be competent in the general areas of communications, algebra, interpersonal relations, and anatomy and physiology. Program graduates are competent to perform imaging examinations and accompanying responsibilities assigned to a sonographer at the direction of physicians qualified to request and/or perform sonographic procedures. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is competent to perform as a sonographer and to:

Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, positioning, and sonographic techniques to accurately demonstrate anatomical structures on a sonogram.
Determine factors to achieve optimum sonographic techniques with minimum biohazard to the patient.
Evaluate sonographic images for appropriate positioning and image quality.
Provide patient care and comfort.
Recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate life-saving first aid and basic life-support procedures.
Evaluate the performance of sonographic systems, know the safe limits of equipment operation and report malfunctions to the proper authority.
Exercise independent judgment and discretion in the technical performance of medical imaging procedures.
Participate in sonographic quality assurance programs.

Program Goals

The goals of the Ogeechee Technical College DMS program are to:

To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the abdominal-extended sonography concentration.

To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the obstetrics and gynecology sonography concentration.

The program will retain 70% of students.
Job placement for graduates will be at least 75%.
At least 50% of graduate surveys will be returned.
At least 50% of employer surveys will be returned.
At least 60% of graduates will pass the credentialing exams for abdominal extended and obstetrics and gynecology.
